May
This month may commonly be known as the time when a
young man's fancy turns to thoughts of love, but it
certainly is a popular month for all sorts of
celebrations.
Since before the Middle Ages, May Day was considered
a time for dancing and rejoicing as the pagans
considered it a day that marked halfway through the
year. While the Maypole didn't quite catch on here
in the States, overseas almost every village had one
and children went round it weaving colorful ribbons
as they danced.
The festival of Beltane is celebrated with bonfires
and optimism, lovers leaped over the flames to bring
luck in their futures together. |
